Cook, the president and CEO of physician staffing firm Pacific Companies, recently signed a lease for a new office building that will allow the firm to double in size in the next few years. Based in Aliso Viejo, California, Pacific Companies focuses on physician staffing nationwide, both permanent and locum tenens (temporary medical staffing). The firm has several remote employees and about 35 office staff members but is on an aggressive hiring spree. Cook expects that the company will fill its new office space, which will hold about 80 employees, within the next couple of years. What accounts for this fast-paced growth – and the company’s place on Staffing Industry Analysts’ 2016 list of Fastest Growing Staffing Companies?First, Cook says, it’s a good time to be in the medical staffing business. “There are a lot of shortages in health care right now,” Cook said. The Baby Boomers are aging, which means they are both retiring from jobs they have held, including in medicine, and requiring more medical services. The Affordable Care Act has increased the number of people with access to insurance and thus has increased demand for primary care doctors.“That confluence of events has created quite a demand for what we do in the marketplace,” Cook said. But the company’s growth is not just due to these external factors. Cook cites several internal decisions and strategies that have contributed as well:* Expansion into temporary staffing: Medical practices and hospitals may need temporary physicians to fill in for doctors on leave, for example, or in some cases to see patients while the employer is searching for a permanent candidate.Pacific Companies, founded in 2000, started its locum tenens division about four years ago. “It’s been doubling in revenue each year,” Cook said.Offering temporary staffing allows Pacific Companies to help clients immediately fill a position even as they conduct a more in-depth search. It also can allow a physician to evaluate an opportunity and see if it’s a good fit before making a long-term commitment, said John Paulk, COO, who heads the locum tenens practice.“It’s a parallel approach to solving a problem,” Paulk said. “One of our advantages is that we can offer that tandem approach.”* Focus on training and hiring: “We have got a tremendous staff here,” Cook said. “Last year we revamped our entire hiring process and our training has always been second to none.”One of the company’s founders focuses exclusively on training, sitting with staff members and helping them learn. The company recently redid its training manuals. And every Wednesday, the employees gather for a 1- to 2-hour training session; topics could include questions to ask a gastroenterologist, compensation models for physicians, or how to discover a candidate’s true motivation for changing jobs.* Attention to detail: Placing physicians is different from many types of staffing placements since the candidates are highly compensated and are often looking for jobs beyond their local area: For permanent placements, for example, candidates may move across the country.Pacific Companies sends a consultant to visit the practice that is hiring. They meet with the other physicians as well as with the administrative team so they can thoroughly document how the practice operates including financial details… They also meet with a real estate agent in the area so they can tell the candidate what it would be like to live there.“Physicians like the level of detail we give them: a full practice analysis and information on what the area and community are like,” Cook said.36RightClick Top staffing segment(s) served – IT

Today the two founders serve as Presidents of the firm, which has upwards of 30 employees and has offices in New York City and Stamford, Connecticut. The firm has grown quickly, landing it a place on Staffing Industry Analysts’ 2016 list of Fastest Growing Staffing Companies.Peffer cited several ways in which the firm has accelerated its growth by outperforming its competitors:Finding the best candidates“We try to represent the best of the best,” said Vice President Karin Prah. “That’s what clients are looking for.”The firm finds these stellar candidates by focusing on personal referrals from other IT professionals.“We try to minimize finding a lot of candidates off the job boards, which is something that most employers already have access to. We leverage our networks and ask, ‘Who are the three best technologists you have worked with in this area?’” Prah said. “We try to find qualified candidates that others are not able to: developers, network and systems engineers, project managers, business analysts, directors of application development or infrastructure – anything that you would find within a technology department.”RightClick also heavily uses social media, looking beyond LinkedIn and other obvious channels.“We try to leverage some of the less mainstream mediums including different groups and forums where you can find IT professionals collaborating,” said Vice President Matt Trembicki. They also look to specialized technology focused meet ups and conferences. And once they find the candidates, they put each one through a proprietary vetting process before matching them to any client opening.Nurturing a well-trained, collaborative staff“We tend to hire and promote from within, as opposed to trying to find people from competing agencies,” Peffer said. New hires go through a three-month training program, as well as ongoing development and mentoring. There are also opportunities for networking and team building during weekly happy hours and monthly company outings.Allisa Ciccia, Chief of Staff, has been promoted twice during her two years with RightClick. She has been impressed with how actively the two founders participate in the day-to-day work. “It’s important for the employees as well as our candidates and clients to know how everyone from top to bottom is invested in the process.”Casting a wide net for innovationNot all the company’s initiatives are suggested by the presidents or top executives.“We’re cognizant that as small business owners, we don’t have all the answers,” Peffer said. “We like to have our employees come to us with ideas. We take the ideas very seriously and end up implementing a lot of them.”For example, the employee who heads the contract staffing division, Vice President Brendan Adinolfi, suggested to separate the contract placement from the direct placement part of the business. “If you really break them apart, they’re fundamentally different types of transactions, from how we get the job order, to how we recruit the candidates, to how we consummate the deal,” Peffer said. “Breaking up those businesses and managing them separately has really been a big contributor to our growth on the staffing side of the business.”37THMED LLC Top staffing segment(s) served – Locum tenens

The founders of Fidelis Partners — Arthur Cooper, Michael Douglas and Vince Zizzo — were introduced to John Martin, the founder of Medestar, by a colleague who thought they could share leads since they were in complementary businesses. Fidelis handled direct placement of physicians, while Medestar focused primarily on temporary medical staffing. Both companies were founded in 2009, and they merged in October 2010.“Although we each have different backgrounds, working together to improve healthcare staffing made sense,” said Cooper, who is president of THMED. Cooper and his partners came from another medical staffing firm; Martin had sold an IT staffing company and was looking for his next challenge.Today, THMED (pronounced “T-H-med”) is the parent company with several brands in its portfolio: Fidelis Partners; Medestar; Allied Staffing Network (ASN), which places nurses and other medical professionals; and THMED Executive Search, which specializes on executive and academic placements. The firm is also developing a private network to facilitate direct candidate to employer matches. The multiple brands are one of the keys to the company’s quick growth, allowing it to enter and cater to different slices of the market.“We started ASN and THMED Executive Search in 2013 to meet our customers’ demand for nursing, allied, executive and academic recruitment,” Cooper said.“Everything we are doing is centered around the opportunity to help our clients fulfill all of their staffing needs,” Cooper said. Having multiple brands “allows us the opportunity to be a full service partner to our clients.”Due to the merger and the addition of new brands, THMED’s growth has been swift. At the end of 2011, the firm had 43 internal staff members; it finished 2016 with 144. The firm exceeded $35 million in revenue last year. Revenue has grown at least 25 percent each year, with over 30 percent growth each of the last three years. Some of the biggest names in health care are on the firm’s growing list of clients.Today, THMED has staffing projects in all 50 states, with staff members working from two offices: the headquarters in Dallas and a satellite office in Orange County, California.Martin, Chief Executive Officer of THMED, said the firm’s culture has also helped fuel its growth: “People want to be here and have pride in the company and feel connected,” he said. “We’ve worked very hard to be extremely transparent with our employees. They can celebrate and share our successes and even learn from our failures at times.”The growth of THMED has been fueled by hard work, but the team also has fun together working to support local charities and coordinating social gatherings outside of the office. It makes for an environment where employees want to work hard and stay.“Our staff and our culture are our biggest assets,” Cooper said. “We will only be as good as the people we hire.”38CorTech International Top staffing segment(s) served – Industrial, Office/clerical

When their mother joined the business, they expanded it from permanent placement to temporary staffing as well, said Jaimie Rios, the chief branding officer and one of the three siblings who now run the business as partners.“My brothers Rob and David and I were born and bred in the staffing world,” Rios said. All three came to Accurate after finishing college – at which point their parents retired and they took over.Today, the firm’s focus is primarily on temporary placement, with a few permanent placement jobs in the mix. The firm focuses on light industrial staffing, filling many positions in warehousing and logistics. The firm also fills some clerical and other positions in other industries.Over the years, the firm expanded throughout the Chicago area – then to Florida, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and California. Today, Accurate Personnel has about 140 full-time employees.“Most of our growth has been very organic,” Rios said. “We haven’t acquired other agencies. It’s really been because of our strong relationships with our clients. They have brought us to other states or expanded our relationships here in Illinois. It’s been relationship-driven.”The family feeling has nurtured relationships with customers, full-time employees and the workers the firm places in jobs.“We try to treat each customer like they’re our absolute best customer,” Rios said. “We like to get out there and meet our clients and create a custom employment experience for each client. We look at each one as an individual and build our relationships that way.”The firm also treats its full-time employees, such as recruiters, with an eye to retention. Mike Savarese, chief operating officer, said a corporate trainer handles onboarding and continued training. And the company’s growth has created opportunities for advancement. The firm’s relationship with the workers it places is also focused on creating a family feeling – which means workers stick with the firm from job to job, Savarese said. Most of the positions are either long-term temporary jobs or temp to perm.“That’s our best recruiting tool: the longstanding relationship we’ve build with our employees,” Savarese said. The firm offers temporary employees heath insurance and other benefits, including holiday pay and bonuses. “There’s a lot of opportunity for employees,” Savarese said. The firm’s focus on employee retention is a selling point with customers, Rios said.“Companies with high turnover choose to work with Accurate over our competitors because we are able to maintain loyal, long term employees,,” Rios said. “We have a lot of useful tools in terms of employee retention. We really want to make sure that the employees we place are happy. They’re not just another number to us. These are our employees, and we value them.”Even as the firm has adapted its business model to accommodate its growth – competing with national firms instead of just local ones, for example – “we have been able to change it and still maintain that family feel,” Savarese said. “We’re a company that has been around for almost 40 years, but we consider ourselves very young in the business, and we’re still growing.”66Advanced Group Top staffing segment(s) served – Clinical/scientific, Office/clerical
